These studies of Darent Valley lanes and meadows are an exploration in colour and in how few brush few strokes are needed to create an atmosphere of a place.
In early November I was at Socro Art Fair and took part in the Metamorphosis Exhibition with a selection of paintings and also a selection of coasters. These shiny little versions of my paintings are always very popular!
These two oil paintings - the Light through the Canopy (top left) and the Queen of Trees ( top right) were for a commission completed in September to complete a painting of a magnificent beech tree in the Kent countryside. Simon and Joy, who commissioned the painting said "We sketched a map for her, along with simple directions, and sent her on a tree-hunt! Sophie found the tree, and then, to our delight, painted two pictures, giving us a choice. Both were beautiful...." Read more of Simon and Joy's testimonial on the home page.
'Light through the Canopy' is available in the shop
The Darent Valley in Kent is a source of inspiration which I keep returning to. I took this series of Darent Valley paintings to Castle Farm during the lavender season at the farm over two weekends in July 2024.
This series called Enchanted Moments was on display at the Under the Rainbow Exhibition at Bluewater Shopping Centre for 5 weeks during April and May 2024 and also at Rochester Art Fair at the beginnig of May. It was a series focussing on gardens and accompanied by some paintings of the Darent Valley.
The Valley Beneath began as a search for inspiration in the winter landscape and became a series focussing on autumn and winter skies above the Darent Valley.
From November 2023 some of my originals will be on display and available to purchase at Holwood Farm Shop Cafe near Downe in Kent. In November I also took part in SoCro Art Fair in South London
In December 2023 I was delighted to visit Castle Farm Shop near Lullingstone for a very chilly but enjoyable day with a stall in the farmshop courtyard. I also returned to the Paxton Centre in Crystal Palace London SE19 for a group exhibition from 1st-30th December
Thank you to contributors on Instagram who helped me find the right name for this series!! This series includes a number of studies and paintings inspired by rivers, streams and brooks, especially the River Darent in Kent. It captures the light, reflections and different atmosphere along its course. Deep purples and blues set against vibrant splashes of colour are the palette for these riverside paintings.
In October 2023 I was in the historic city of Rochester in Kent for a fabulous weekend at the Art Fair.
A theme I return to time and time again- the beauty of country lanes and how they wind their way through the landscape, sometimes cutting deep into the earth where thousands of journeys have been made. Part of a group exhibition at the Paxton Centre in Crystal Palace, London, July 2023.
A series focussed on trees and woodland. It included studies of the compositions created by the trees and vegetation, some of the details of plants within it and paintings capturing the quality of light, colour and texture amongst the trees.
